Phineas and Luce

Phineas Stillwood was born the only son of moderately wealthy parents. He attended good schools, and was gifted in the art of wizardry. His home was comfortable, and he wanted for very little.

When Phineas was in his mid-teens, his mother gave birth to Glory, Phineas' younger sister. Glory was a sweet and cheerful child, who was doted on by her parents. Although it was rather obvious that his parents preferred his little sister, Phineas was never jealous. He adored Glory and did everything he could to be a good older brother. For six years the family was very happy together.

Then one day, tragedy struck. Phineas took his little sister out for a day on the town. Although he only turned his back for a few moments while purchasing her some candy, the little girl disappeared. The family and city guards searched frantically for days, but Glory was not found. The poor child's body did not turn up for another few months. A local gang lord was suspected of having kidnapped her, but nothing could be proven.

This sadness permanently tore the Stillwood family apart. Phineas' mother and father openly blamed their son for their daughter's death. Phineas was devastated at having lost his sister, and being loathed and rejected by his parents at the same time. He blamed himself as well and began to suffer and emotional breakdown. Phineas' parents eventually broke ties with their son. They moved away from town, asking him not to contact them again. They gave Phineas the house and its furnishings, but otherwise left him to his own fate.

Now utterly alone, Phineas began to drink heavily and self-harm. He threw himself into his studies, becoming an expert with frost magic. He spoke to no one, and was cold and spiteful to anyone who tried to converse with him. Around town he gained the reputation as "that cold-hearted bastard" and earned the nick-name "Ice Man."

Several years passed, during which Phineas drank and hid in his solitude. Then a day came when he began to notice something odd going on around him. He would hear floorboards creaking softly up in the attic. Little bits of food would vanish from the pantry. One of his blankets went missing. Phineas suspected that there might be an intruder in his house.

When Phineas became certain that someone else was living in his home, he set a trap and quickly caught a young half-elven woman. As he interrogated her, he quickly discovered that she was a not an ordinary person. The young woman, whose name was Luce, possessed very little by way of vocabulary. She was well-meaning and innocent, and had only come into his home to escape the cold. Luce was homeless, and seemed to be suffering from an injury to her mind as a result of an assault she had suffered as a child.

Feeling sorry for Luce, Phineas allowed her to stay as a guest in his home. Luce was delighted, and her playful and exuberant nature slowly began to melt the Ice Man's cold heart. 

This odd couple became adventurers, fighting for the liberation of their city. They eventually fell in love as well, becoming husband and wife. These days Phineas is an entirely different person. Although he still comes across as initially grumpy or unfriendly, being with Luce has softened him to the point where his neighbors smile at him and know they can come to him for aid.
